The media platform POMIZH and the NGO Kultura Medialna have published a printed magazine about Dnipro and its surroundings. This edition is dedicated to the city—its culture, history, everyday life, and residents.

“What is Dnipro? What does it mean to live here? What meanings fill the city, and how do they place it in the Ukrainian and global context? With these questions, our team began creating this magazine.

We have always felt that Dnipro is underexplored—first and foremost by ourselves—that the city lacks a careful look at its history, heritage, and mythos, as well as their reinterpretation in a contemporary context. We conceived this edition as our contribution to changing that,” says the POMIZH team.

The first issue collects texts about rethinking the historical and cultural legacy of Dnipro, its local literary myths, music community, and the images and perceptions formed around the city—and, of course, about the war.

The POMIZH magazine is an attempt to explore a city surrounded by many stereotypes. The authors analyze Dnipro’s past and present in various ways—through the deconstruction of imperial and Soviet myths, a look at the city by the writers of the Executed Renaissance, research on poetic practices, and the underground music of the 90s and 2000s. Additionally, they document their personal connections to the city and how it is changing during the war.

“In many ways, this magazine is a love letter to Dnipro. Our team was shaped in this city, where every street tells its own story, and ultimately, this place is home. We hope that after reading the magazine, you’ll view Dnipro through a new lens, and perhaps the city will feel a little closer to your heart,” the team shared.

The first issue is bilingual—all texts are translated from Ukrainian into English. The visual design of the magazine was created by the Kultura studio. In addition to essays and original pieces, POMIZH features poems by Dnipro authors, photographs by local photographers, and illustrations by artists.

The publication won the Grand Prix at the “Best Book Design 2024” competition by the Book Arsenal. It was also awarded in the “Utilitarian Book” category.
